The chemical that is used in watering down paint is called a glaze. It makes your panting look transparent and one would be able to see any previous coating or stains through the new coating but the color now is thicker and translucent.

You can also create a variegated surface by leaving a thicker or less –thick layers of the glaze in different parts of the surface of the cabinet just to create color differences. The color is darker in places where the glaze is thicker and lighter at other places where the glaze is thinner.

The material called glaze has a whitish look when it is wet and a translucent appearance when it is dry. It does not contribute to the color of a painted object because you will discover that the glazed object would always have the color of the paint used in mixing up the glaze, the only work of the glaze is to make the color of the object become translucent i.e. something that you can see through it.

You may choose to glaze your kitchen cabinet particularly for two purposes;

I) if you want your cabinet to have an aged, stylish look

2) if you want the color of the stains on your cabinet to appear darker.

You must make up your mind how you want your color to be before you set out to glaze. A combination of three colors, black, brown and gray paints together with your glaze will produce an aged look whereas a mixture of dark-brown paint plus the glaze would give what looks like the color of the sand. If you choose to create a texture rather than an aged look, you then have to select the paint darker than the main color by at least two shades. For instance you can use blue color to produce a light –blue finishing.

You can find more information about glazing kitchen cabinets at http://www.howtoglazekitchencabinets.com, where you can read about How to glaze kitchen cabinets.
